If you wish to join the Anthony Nolan register, potential donors need to be aged 16-30 (you have until the day before your 31st birthday), weigh at least 50kg (7st 12lb), have a BMI of under 40, must be in excellent general health, be willing to donate to anybody in need of a transplant and to stay on the register until the age of 60.
The first step is to complete an application form. The quickest and easiest way to do this is online by going to http://www.anthonynolan.org/8-ways-you-could-save-life/donate-your-stem-cells
On our website is an animation which will explain the donation process from beginning to end – see: http://www.anthonynolan.org/8-ways-you-could-save-life/donate-your-stem-cells/youre-match-what-happens-next
When we receive the application, we will check it to confirm that you are eligible to join, and if we need any further information we will contact you.
We use cheek swabs to identify your tissue-type, so once your application is approved we will send you a cheek swab kit in the post, so that you can provide a sample for testing. Then all you need to do is post it back to us (in the re-paid envelope provided). It is very simple to do and full instructions are included in the pack.
Also, if you do not meet our registration criteria, that doesn’t mean your story needs to end here. We urgently need all kinds of lifesavers.
From heroic fundraisers taking on marathons on our behalf, to selfless volunteers, monetary donors and awareness-raisers, every single person who supports our work is helping to give people with blood cancer a second chance.
Our researchers and lab scientists are working incredibly hard to make transplants more effective, and give patients a better quality of life afterwards – but they just can’t do it without your support.
Or, if you are over 30 there are two other options: there is the British Bone Marrow Register, which is run by the National Blood Service. Their age limit is 40 years and to join you need to be a regular blood donor. If you are interested in joining, please enquire at your next blood donor session or contact them on 0300 123 2323.
There is also DKMS UK who recruit new donors up to the age of 55 years. Please visit www.dkms.org.uk or call 0203 176 7620.
